Seasonal Precipitation Predictability for the Northern Hemisphere Using Concurrent and Preseason Atmospheric Water Vapor Transport and Sea Surface Temperature

چکیده

Abstract Integrated atmospheric water vapor transport (IVT) is a determinant of global precipitation. In this paper, using the CERA-20C climate reanalysis dataset, we explore three questions in Northern Hemisphere precipitation for four seasons: 1) What covariability between leading spatiotemporal modes seasonal sea surface temperature (SST), IVT, and Hemisphere? 2) How well can spatial be reconstructed from IVT SST same season? 3) next season predicted current season’s IVT? Wavelet analyses identify covariation those 2–8-yr band, with highest amplitude March–May (MAM) season, provide firm physical explanation potential predictability. We find that subset 10 principal components fields has significant trends connections modes, provides an accurate statistical concurrent reconstruction one-season-ahead forecast thus providing pathway to improving understanding prediction extremes context change attribution, longer prediction, scenarios. The same-season model explain 76% variance, next-season 58% variance hemispheric on average.

Atmospheric Water Vapor Transport and the Water Balance of North

The atmospheric water vapor flux divergence and certain aspects of the water balance of North America are investigated, using data from the period May 1, 1958-Apr. 30, 1963. The mean vertical distribution of flux divergence is computed for the United States for the months of January (1962, 1963) and July (1961, 1962). Strong flux convergence in the lowest kilometer and divergence in the remaind...

Simultaneous Tuning of Water Vapour and Atmospheric Temperature for Determination of Sea Surface Temperature from AVHRR

A novel physics-based method for determination of sea surface temperature (SST) from AVHRR is explained in detail. Starting from the equation of radiative transfer in the mean value approximation, we use variational calculus to derive an expression relating the difference between the radiance calculated using a first guess atmospheric profile and the observed satellite radiance (∆I), to the cor...

Basin mode of Indian Ocean sea surface temperature and Northern Hemisphere circumglobal teleconnection

[1] Observational analysis and model experiments show that the sea surface temperature anomaly associated with the Indian Ocean Basin mode (IOBM), which persists from spring to summer, can generate significant circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) in the Northern Hemisphere summer midlatitude atmosphere. A warm IOBM can induce a new atmospheric heating source in the south Asia through a positive fe...

The estimated potential predictability of seasonal mean Australian surface temperature

The seasonal mean of a climate variable is affected by processes with timescales from less than seasonal to interannual or longer. In this paper, the seasonal mean is conceptualised as consisting of intraseasonal and slowly varying (longer than a season) components. The slow component of the seasonal mean is related to slowly varying internal and external processes which are potentially predict...
